I. What is a ISW1598 Keypad Smart Prepaid Water Meter?

ISW1598 Integrated Keypad Smart Prepaid Water Meter is an advanced utility management device that measures water flow and operates on a pay-as-you-go billing mechanism. It is driven by STS TOKEN vending under standard & secure encryption algorithm and digital flow-sensing technology with an automated internal motorized electronic ball valve. Once the customer’s prepaid credit drops to zero or an active leakage is detected, the prepaid water meter automatically shuts off the water supply until more credit is purchased.
II. How Keypad Smart Prepaid Water Meters Work?
1. Sensing and Measurement: Instead of traditional mechanical gears that wear out over time, smart prepaid water meters often use high-precision ultrasonic or electromagnetic sensors to capture low flow rates down to a few liters per hour.
2. Credit Calculation: The meter’s internal Microcontroller Unit (MCU) processes the digital flow signals and converts them into volume (cubic meters or gallons). It actively subtracts the consumption from the customer’s purchased credit.
3. Wireless Data Transmission: To preserve battery, the meter does not stay permanently connected to the network. Instead, it wakes up at regular intervals to broadcast usage profiles, balance metrics, and alarm event data via low power wireless networks like NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, or Sigfox to utility servers and mobile Apps.
4. Valve Control: The meter features a low power magnetic latching ball valve. When a token is validated or credit is confirmed via the cloud, a brief electrical pulse opens the valve. If credit hits zero, another pulse rotates valve closed to stop the water flow.
III. Types of Keypad Smart Prepaid Water Meter Systems
Keyapd smart prepaid water meters generally fall into two structural categories based on how they process tokens:
• Split Type System (STS Standard): The physical prepaid water meter is installed outside the home (e.g., under a ground pit, inside plastic box or utility room). It pairs wirelessly with an indoor Customer Interface Unit (CIU) with a keypad interface. Customers purchase water amount with a secure 20-digit encrypted token code via online portal system, SMS, or mobile Apps, then top up it into the water meter via indoor CIU.
• Fully Integrated Cloud Systems: These units omit the physical keypad. Top-ups are purchased via mobile banking or smartphone Apps. The utility platform transmits the credit directly to the water meter over a 4G cellular or IoT gateway network, opening the valve automatically without any manual code entry.
IV. Benefits vs. Operational Risks

Aspect Benefits Risks & Vulnerabilities
For Landlords & Utilities • Upfront revenue collection prevents bad debt.
• Remotely manage units without manual readings.
• Fast isolation of property leakages.
• Physical scale buildup or debris can jam the internal motorized valve over time.
• High upfront device costs compared to mechanical meters.
For Tenants & Consumers • Complete transparency over daily consumption.
• App-driven alerts point out leaks early.
• Prevents shock utility bills at the end of the month.
• Risk of unexpected water shut-offs at zero balance.
• Total dependence on battery health inside the sealed unit.
